Sažetak:This volume presents various accounts of how communication contributes to organizational life. The case studies in this book address a broad array of issues faced in today's workplace, including ethics, racial tension, sexual harassment, employee health, electronic mail, and automation. Retail, manufacturing, public service, and newspaper organizations provide the contexts for the case-study research presented here. Some of these cases focus on how communication can hinder organizational functioning, while others highlight the creative and positive uses of various communication practices. In keeping with the goals of case studies in general, these examples offer answers to the "why" and "how" questions of organizational communication. They are intended to demonstrate how organizational members initiated, enhanced, or inhibited effective communication, and to focus on the antecedent and subsequent behaviors related to specific communicative performances. The book is organized around several topics that reveal the central focus of the chapters in each section. It is important to keep in mind, however, that the headings of the various parts are not mutually exclusive. While most of the organizations written about in this volume were quite willing to let us read about their success, few agreed to be named when their situations were deemed problematic. Each of the cases is based on real events, and are to be studied with an eye toward understanding not just what happened but how and why communication made the situation possible. Key terms and study questions at the end of each case will help direct attention to the salient issues. In addition, each of the authors suggest relevant readings for his/her topics.
